COMING UP THIS WEEK

Monday: An Ohio House committee spends its evening hearing more about school finance at the Warren County Educational Service Center. The fun starts at 6 p.m. and focuses on technology and shared services. (They’re working towards developing a new way to fund Ohio schools.)

Monday: The Ohio Board of Regents considers asking state schools to ban smoking on campus. Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee says he doesn’t mind the idea but it’s “not at the top of my priority list.”

Wednesday: The annual meeting for the American Legislative Exchange Commission (ALEC) begins in Salt Lake City. ALEC’s education task force’s mission is “to ensure America’s youth are given the opportunity to succeed.”

Wednesday: Students report for their first day of school at Columbus’ year-round schools. First day of class for all other Columbus students is Aug. 22.

Wednesday: The Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and School Employees Retirement System talk to an Ohio House subcommittee about pension reform.

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON

  • Among other things, we’re looking at what happens to students when charter schools change management and at what happens to colleges when federal funding streams change course.

Thankfully, the exposure ALEC is receiving has many members dropping out. Citizens won`t have a voice in government until ALEC is gone.
