August Special Election Includes 35 Ohio School Districts Asking Voters to Approve Taxes

In August, voters in 35 school districts will have the opportunity to weigh in on their local school districts’ tax rates.

There are actually 36 school issues on ballots for the August 7 special election, according to the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office. (One school district has two issues.)

All but eight of the issues are asking voters to approve new taxes, mostly in the form of property taxes.

Approving new taxes isn’t something voters generally like to do.

  • In March 2012, just over half of issues asking voters to approve new taxes were mixed:  Just over half were approved.
  • In November 2012, a relatively high turnout election, about a quarter of new-tax issues were approved.

Early voting for the August election started Tuesday. You’ve got until Monday to register to vote in the August election.
