Columbus Teacher Fired For Grabbing Student Who Spit at Her

The Columbus Dispatch reports that a teacher’s aide for special needs students at a Columbus Elementary school has been fired because she grabbed a student who was spitting at her. The student had been spitting on the aide “for days” before the grabbing incident:

When students were lining up after lunch on March 7, the girl moved toward Finch, spitting at her. Incident reports provided by Columbus City Schools say Finch “grabbed both hands, releasing one of the hands to bring (child) into the office.”

“I was trained to protect myself. (A nearby) teacher thought I was hurting the child when I wasn’t. I was not only protecting myself, but I was protecting the children around her,” Finch said. “I feel like I was misjudged.”
