“Supreme Court Rejects Part of Arizona Immigration Law,” Despite Support From N.H. Legislature

This past May, after the Obama administration challenged Arizona’s controversial immigration law before the Supreme Court, the New Hampshire Legislature passed a resolution (HCR 2) that “embraces the law that lets Arizona law enforcement hold and question the immigration status for anyone stopped for any reason.” (Nashua Telegraph, 5/10/12). Today, the Supreme Court upheld the most controversial provision, but struck down four others.


The court unanimously sustained the law’s centerpiece, the one critics have called its “show me your papers” provision. It requires state law enforcement officials to determine the immigration status of anyone they stop or arrest if there is reason to suspect that the individual might be an illegal immigrant.
