Teams of Indianapolis Public Schools employees and volunteers are trying to convince dropouts in the district to return to school this year. They’re also seeking out students who’ve left IPS schools for charter or turnaround schools.
The school year ends Tuesday in four Indianapolis Public Schools slated for state takeover next year. When they re-open, they’ll be run by new administrators and overhauled staffs.
State superintendent Tony Bennett said Monday he appreciates the urgency with which the companies tapped to turn around five Indiana schools are approaching their task. That said, he would have chosen different words to convey that sense of urgency.
Board members had to reconcile conflicts between important tenets of the presently-prevailing school of thought in education policy — tenets, by the way, that affect schools both inside and outside IPS’ boundaries.
